Hi Andrea, my adivice is to add the subtitle if you want to get the maximine exposure on Medium. Hard to get picked for further distribution if you don't follow the rules. The subtitle is also a chance to draw the readers deeper into wanting to read what you write. Your example "Red" and the line following is a good example of how not to do it and no, you don't want to resort to that. But you could say "Red" with a subtitle using aline form the poem, such as, "There are days I need power, there are days I only see red." On a personal note, this article was on getting read more often. If that does not matter to you, then ignore it, do it as you want, and just publish without submitting to any magazines? Your work and your choice Andrea. If you do the subtitle thing, please look at my poetry and my attempts to write solid subtitles. They sem to work for me and may help you see them differently.
