Hi Beth, I have been reading a lot of Donald Hall lately, especially his Essays After Eighty, and his Notes Nearing Ninety. He talks a lot about your second sentence and how he sort of withdrew from the world at times, yet still maintained an interesting life. You might enjoy them.
