I can no longer see you,
but you never leave me.

I hear your voice whispering
to me as I lay in bed before
the dawn light. I walk alone
now, but I feel you brush by
my side reaching for my hand.
I close my eyes and you are
there, your faint smile, your eyes,
so tired at the end, so relieved
as you closed them for the last time.

I left your book by the bed, waiting
my love, please come home and finish
the story, please lay besides me again,
forty three years since I last slept alone.

The kids called, they are good, or as best
they can be without you… we never finish
a call without tears, without missing you,
but I think you know this, you would never
leave them, you will always be near.
